Excellent computer, almost no compromises.

This is a sturdy, fast, dependable, neat professional computer with very few compromises.I get 4 solid hours of battery life while working with large files in graphics programs and connected to the internet all the time. This is how I measure battery life. Measurements with dim brightness and doing almost nothing are nonsense to me.The keyboard layout, tactile feel, touchpad and peripheral ports are all well laid out, strong and functional. Every component works great. The computer creates almost no noise and very little heat after you update the BIOS.Strongest characteristic is that I have used it intensively for 3 months and it has never crashed. The outside appearance is still top notch, thanks to the great quality metal finish all over, with no cheap plastic that starts scratching or disassembling after a few weeks.People tend to look at it and ask the brand name and model, because its clean aesthetics stand out in a world of laptops full of snazzy motives and funny useless gadgets and gizmos.I only have 3 complaints:- The trackpoint falls off. Not sure if I should glue it in place and shut up.- The 1600x900 display is outdated and there is no better display option. It lacks contrast and brightness compared to today's mainstream laptop displays. My eyes suffered initially but I got used to it. Pickier users wouldn't tolerate it and return the computer.- The speakers are cheap garbage. Even my Blackberry sounds better and louder :). Anyway I frequently use headphones, so I tend to forget about this issue.

Great buy

Great laptop. Verry Professional, Verry Stable, and Verry Secure. This is a great laptop for anyone who needs to meet that criteria. My whole i.t. firm has one. Network Engineers, Helpdesk, Management, and Sales.It also runs games ok. :-P

I just love my laptop, speedy and wonderful design. Love the aluminum body which definitely helps with the temperature of the machine. Only complaint is with Win7 which did strange things to the headset plug to not disable on board sound.

hidden gem on Amazon

How did I even find this computer on Amazon? Navigated to Laptop department, then entered these two words into search box:7200 hdmiThen, because I wanted a great value, limited the results to items from Amazon's warehouse deals. Of the 40 or so laptops that came up, this seemed like the best deal.As my search words suggest, it has a 7200 hard drive and an hdmi port. For me, both of those features are critical. Considering its impressive specs, which include quad-core and usb 3.0, this laptop is very enticing. Price for a new one is currently $1070, but I snagged a "like new" for a mere $700. The only obvious difference between my laptop and new, is that mine shipped in a generic box.The only negative so far, and it's minor, is that the power adapter is big.It's infrequent that I desire to use a computer outside my house, but I want that option. But I don't want portability to diminish my computing power while at home, so this laptop is ideal. It's heavier and bulkier than what's preferred for transport, so if portability is your primary reason for a laptop, then don't get this. But if you want a fast space-saving computer, that you can take outside if needed, this model will please you.Odd sidenote-------------When I received this computer, its original product key sticker had been crossed out with a black X, and a second "Refurbished" product key sticker added. I don't see the point of that, considering that I cleared the X using adhesive remover, so now I have an extra Win 7 activation code! Golly!

Dell is reliable

This computer looks as great as it operates. There are some hiccups but I put all my computers thru the test! I use them on a high processing level for sound and in studio and live performance. I've tried other computers and nothing still performs like a DELL. HP claims that they have the best in audio and computers for music....don't buy that sales pitch. For the home user, it's great, but in the commercial world using windows, DELL is always the best in performance. I tried two different HP with Beats audio....junk! I needed a computer that could perform under very very very heavy audio AND Video processing requests.....at the same time. Like 4 hours of continuous processing the highest quality video and music AT ONCE. NO HP could match the performance of the dells integrated video processor and the i7 dedicated processor. I've always used DELL and have one that is 7 years old and still our performs other NEW Toshiba's, HP's, Lanovo's....anything. if you need to use windows, DELL is going to be the best built with windows to perform this kind of processing.

Now just waiting for Windows 8 to ship...

I am talking about my experience with this product. I knew I wanted this piece of hardware because I Beta tested Windows 8 on a similar Samsung Series 7 slate. I already know Windows 8 runs A*W*E*S*O*M*E when installed on it. That said, I was surprised at how much tablet functionality there is in the OEM version of Windows 7 Professional that comes installed on it. Still Windows 8 is a 100% improvement and upgrading to Windows 8 really makes this a great Tablet PC.There are some things with mentioning.PROCESSOR, MEMORY AND DRIVES: Nice i5 CPU. It gets rather warm directly under the processor. 4gb limit to memory. Doesn't look like it is easy, if even possible to upgrade by yourself. No CD/DVD Player. Micro SD drive is handy, but doesn't substitute well for a CD drive. The restore software provided for emergency recovery of the OS comes on, as you might guess, optical DVD format.PORTS: There is 1 USB port on the Slate itself. Another on the dock. Both are USB 2.0 only. Single USB port design is limiting.(What I mean is that with only 1 USB port on the tablet a device with a 2 dongle connection is not possible without a hub). No 3.0 support is also something to be unhappy about. -1/2 star.I haven't tried using the Micro HDMI port. On Windows 8 the single Headphone/Microphone jack didn't work with a set of Apple IPod earbuds.NETWORK: Undocked, you only have Wi-Fi network access, there is no LAN port. The Bluetooth keyboard seems flaky and I have to use a USB keyboard instead.BATTERY: The battery lasts long, but 7 hours is running under optimum conditions. My results are more like 5 hours using Windows 8.VIDEO & I/O: Video is sharp and small print is easy to read. Very responsive to touch on Windows 8.MISC: Hardware sensors are very good. Comes with a stylus and that helps since it works as a mouse.DOCKING STATION: A definite must! Has a normal HDMI port. Again a huge lack of USB ports. Only comes with 1 USB 2.0 port. Also a headphone jack. Has a normal LAN port for network access.BLUETOOTH KEYBOARD: After initial activation of the device, the driver updated and it hasn't worked since. Since I bought this with the hopes of avoiding a USB Bottleneck, I am not very happy with the performance of the Bluetooth keyboard so far. -1/2 Star.I know that I could have waited this until Windows 8 comes out and have a huge choice of new tablets and slates to choose from. Many I would bet are more feature rich than this design. I think that it is important to buy something you are comfortable with. I am comfortable with this slate and I know it works well on Windows 8 without any OEM software. Even with its drawbacks. I would rather have the devil I know than the devil I don't know.
