OverallThe HP EliteBook 8460w is a high end notebook with an outstanding durability, stability (no plastics, but the keyboard!), simplistic design, battery life and performance. In my opinion it is an optimal balance between performance and battery life. With the 9-cell battery you get around 9-11 hours of surfing at display brightness of 60 %. It easily keeps up with MacBook Pro's and even exceeds it dramatically when considering the price / performance ratio.One fact that one may critisize is the thickness. With 3.18 cm (1.25 inches) it is quite a bit thicker than a MacBook Pro, although it doesnt actually seem thick when its standing in front of you. When considering what is in the inside of this beautiful piece, it is a tiny sacrifice. Also, with 2.2 kg (4.85 lb) it is not too heavy.Performance & MemoryInter Core i7 2630QM, more CPU power than the majority of people uses. Everything runs extremely fast, compiling of large programs ain't a problem at all.In fact, the CPU ranks 48 at[...], which is impressive for a 14 inch workstation.AMD FirePro(tm) M3900 w/1 GB gDDR3 is the weakest part of the laptop, although it still provides plenty of GP. 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM (2D) is sufficient for running plenty of programs simultaneously.Durability & StabilityHP did an amazing job here. It looks and especially is very stable, everything but the keyboard is made out of magnesium/aluminium alloys. Im sure the laptop will look almost exactly the same in 3+ years. Of course, the design is a personal thing, but for people who like a simplistic and professional look, the HP 8460w your laptop. There are no touch-pad like buttons, but only hard buttons and HP avoids plastic outside the keyboard. The keyboard and the mousepad are of the quality of a MacBook pro. There is also a finger print sensor which works smoothly.DisplayThere is always a big discussion about 14' displays. This one's, I'd say, quite good. Both the brightness as well as the resolution (1600 x 900) is very good. If you watch from an angle onto the display, you might see the corners to appear a bit darker. All in all the display is not exceptional (as none of the 14 inchers are), but if you want a mobile workstation I consider 14' to be the optimal size.
