Wonderful laptop with a few annoyances

This came close to being a 5 star purchase. It's a fast quad core system with 8G of memory, bought here for $999. The graphics are not top notch (and that drags the Windows Experience Index down to 5.4), but for my purposes it's fine. I needed 4 fast cores, and this delivers.The keyboard, though, is frustrating beyond belief. It's about full size, and the touch is ok, but some genius at HP decided on three massive blunders:1) the up and down arrow keys are half size, and difficult to hit, unless perhaps you're a six year old girl with unusually small hands. I'm an adult male with large hands.2) The function keys, F1 through F12, are a mainstay in many, many software applications. F5 is the "do it" key in a wealth of software - refresh in most browsers, compile and run in many IDEs. F3 is "search again" in many tools. F1 is often Help. I use them all the time.For some reason, HP decided to make those keys half-height, and do double duty. If you want F3, you have to type Function-F3. The F3 key, by itself, brightens the display. I have no idea why the manufacturer thought that brightening the display was a more common operation than searching for something; I only know that after fifteen years of using function keys as the quick way to get work done, I don't like having them buried under a bunch of keys to adjust brightness and volume.3) The insert key has been given the same treatment as the F keys. The key combination for Insert is Function-PrintScreen. And it's also half-height. As someone who for years has used control-insert, shift-insert and shift-delete to move text around, it's unusable. I'm forcing my fingers to learn control-C, V and X instead, and I don't like it.For a laptop that's clearly aimed at power users - you don't need 4 cores and 8G of memory for most users - the decision to cripple power user shortcuts is a very odd one. The simple solution is to plug in a USB keyboard with a key layout that you like, but that's not a great solution for a portable laptop.Otherwise a fine machine. Not much bloatware, over 600G of disk free when you get it, adequate USB, decent screen.

Fast and clean!

This is so nice to get my hands on! The finger printer reader makes it so I dont have to remember any passwords anymore! The graphics are great, and the widi is very easy to set up (with not stutter). And did I say it was fast? WOW! The only complaint I had about it was that the graphics card was toast on arrival but was taken care of by HP and got a 5 yr warranty for my troubles.

No Complaints

I got this laptop as a replacement for my dying MacBook, and have had no hardware problems as of yet. I installed 16GB of RAM I bought from Crucial (i.e. not from Lenovo). I currently run Mint 13 with MATE (which runs like a charm). Hence, I cannot say much with regards to how well the Lenovo distribution of Windows will run. Nowadays, the only time I use Windows is running MS Office inside of VirtualBox. I give it one 2.6GhZ CPU and 2GB of RAM, and it runs fine. Albeit, the limit of my Windows usage is Chrome and MSO, so I wouldn't know about heavy computing in Windows.Lenovo, unlike any other manufacturer, puts function before form. Here are some specific things I admire about it:1. It is the only non-Apple laptop I have found that has a keyboard that is pleasant to type on.2. It has the lost and forgotten mouse thingy in the middle of the keyboard (don't know the technical term for it).3. The trackpad is flush with the rest of the top plate, making it much easier to clean.4. Unlike MacBooks, the edges are rounded, so you don't get sores on your forearm after extended usage.5. The CD drive is a tray instead of a slot.6. Unlike MacBooks, extended usage of the laptop on top of lap does not result in third-degree burns.Mine came with Lenovo's own flavor of Win7 Professional 64-bit. I used it for maybe half an hour before I installed Mint, but I can say this:1. If you want Windows 7 Professional, buy it seperately, and upgrade it yourself. Lenovo's version comes with a good bit of unwanted trial software. This is true of any brand, so don't let it turn you off Lenovo.2. If you want upgraded RAM, buy it separately, and install it yourself. It isn't that hard, and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than buying it from Lenovo.3. Don't get the fingerprint reader. If you don't have a choice with regards to getting a fingerprint reader, make sure to disable it in the BIOS. Fingerprints may seem more secure than passwords, but they aren't. Fingerprint readers can be spoofed easily. Using a fingerprint reader instead of a password is like using a password that's literally written on your computer.If you want any given upgrade, if possible, buy it separately and install it yourself. It will save you a lot of time and money.Things that I don't like (there aren't many):1. The physical switch to unlock the monitor seems somewhat flimsy. I anticipate that it will be the first thing to break.2. The physical monitor is somewhat flexible.3. It seemed a little heavy at first, but you get used to it. What is one to expect with a 15" laptop? It is certainly lighter than a 15" MacBook.

Pretty Good, but not sure if its worth the price.

I thought I give me first impressions of this new Windows 8 Convertible. First off the device is very slick, its light weight, looks great. It not the easiest thing to open but once its opened it works well. As excited as I was to get this, there were several blaring quirks that I wouldn't expect from a $1500 device.1. The wifi intermittently cuts out. This seems to be a known issue you can read about everyone complaining here. To save you some time reading the thread there are three things I dida.Update the driver[...]b.Change the power settings -- Set the Wireless Adapter Settings to Maximum Performance (both battery and wiredc.Update the driver properties1. Bring up the device manager by searching "device manager" from the charms menu under settings.2. Click on network adapters in the device manager.3. Right click on "Realtek RTL8723A wireless ..." under network adapters. Click on properties.4. In the properties box click on the advanced pane.5. Inside the advanced pane set the following values to these parameters:selective suspend: disabled (I think this is the only change necessary but I did the other 2 parameter changes as well, you can experiment with different choices)selective suspend timeout: 60WiFi config: WiFiClick OK to save settings2. There is no keyboard light, which have been on all my Lenovo work computer, so it's hard to see the keyboard in the dark.3. When you flip the Yoga and try watching a movie, you'll notice the speakers are now pointed away from you! Even still the speakers are louder than the iPad.Ok about Windows 8The biggest problem with Windows 8 is that it comes preloaded with Junk! The start bar is full on things I will never use and there is a ton of Trial Wear already installed. I was particularly disappointed that MacAfee (part of the company that gave me this Ultrabook) was continuously popping up messages that were very hard to close with tiny buttons and dropdowns asking me to buy a subscription or register when as far as I can tell it comes with a subscription.Once you remove all this and get things set up its actually pretty nice, however moving tiles around is hard work (not nearly as easy as a ipad).There is no Official Facebook App, after some research you can integrate facebook with the People App but when I did this the news feed is different and nearly all the businesses I liked are featured and it is missing a ton of features such as unliking the businesses I don't want to see as full page adds.Also the App are more expensive. Why is Star Wars Angry Birds $5?User profiles are very nice and this is something iPads don't have. I am pretty happy with this feature and you can add picture passwords that work okish.Overall once you get it set up I think it is pretty nice, I don't think the average user wants to spend the time I did to set this up though and I really think it could have been done better.

Nice, but two issues...

I got the Yoga 13 in support of my photography - it allows me to have a fairly high-end computer in a very lightweight package, fully capable of running Lightroom and Photoshop and being able to process 18-21 megapixel images efficiently. I also like the touch screen and tablet mode for watching movies, viewing slideshows or just surfing. I have two issues though, that have made me sometimes wonder if I should have waited until there were competing models out there. (This was without a doubt, the most capable touchscreen laptop available at the time.)First, the fan runs continuously, even when the computer is just idling. It can get quite loud when the system is working even modestly hard. This is apparently a well-known issue and there is no fix at the present time.Second, the trackpad is absolutely awful. I'm in IT myself and have seen many many laptops over the years, and this compares with the worst, trackpad-wise. It alternates rapidly between being hyper-sensitive and not responding at all, it skips, it causes random effects... I've sent emails prematurely, deleted blocks of text, moved things around, etc. After a fair bit of fiddling with the mouse and synaptics settings it's gotten slightly better, but it's still much more effective to use a real mouse with this computer.One other, relatively small item: the right shift and Enter keys are unusually small, leading to some mistyping.On the flip side the screen and video are magnificent, the tablet mode works very well, sound is great, and all in a remarkably compact package.

I've had this laptop for about 2 weeks. (Mine has all the same specs save for 8GB RAM - I have 4.) I love it! Getting my programs and files transferred from my old laptop was a breeze and took very little time. I had an issue upgrading Windows 8 to the PRO edition with Media Center. Microsoft Tech support was outstanding (I know?) at getting me up and running in 20 minutes.I have to imagine you've read all the professional reviews, and now you want to know if it lives up to it on the consumer end. I haven't used it much as a tablet yet because I plan to do that more in the summer. Also - one of the first things I did was install Start8 to replace the start menu on the desktop. Very good software that is well worth 5 dollars. I move this thing around frequently. Battery life with heavy use is about 4-5 hours. If I am going back and forth to the machine, then it will last much longer. Every works really well out of the box, and it's speedy.So here is the one thing I think everyone buying this machine needs to know. For me, it's not a deal breaker, but it was disappointing, and annoying. In my opinion, Lenovo needs to redesign the keyboard. I tried and tried to get used to the cramped shift key, backspace, and enter. I'm telling you, I missed them every time. So now, at my workstation, I use a high quality external keyboard and mouse and keep the laptop in tent mode. I LOVE this setup. The keyboard on the machine is above average for on the go stuff. It's outstanding in fact. It's just not something I want to use for long periods of work. So really, I have the best of both worlds. And for the record, I have read reviews that directly contradict mine. However, I think anyone buying this machine needs to know they might have an issue here. The keyboard issue seems to improve if you approach the keyboard off center moving your hands slightly to the left. This is hard to get used to doing. The other thing is, it would be nice for the keyboard to be illuminated.Compared to my old laptop, this is a revolution. I am extremely happy with my purchase and would not hesitate, despite the keyboard annoyance, to repeat the purchase.One more item. I tried using a bluetooth mouse with this machine. It performed very poorly. In my research, this seems to be an issue with Yoga and Microsoft Mice. I switched to a mouse with a receiver. perfect.You will not regret this purchase unless you are planning on writing a novel in a coffee shop on this thing. And even then, maybe you will adapt easier than I did.My guess is, Lenovo nailed the future of the laptop.

Amazing machine, just a bit pricey

I apologize to Amazon that I didn't buy this on Amazon. I kept watching for an model with 8G of memory but Amazon only has the 4G one listed. So, I ended up ordering it directly from Lenovo to get a true Ultimate with 8G memory, 256G SSD, and the port replicator. I just can't see buying a computer in 2012 that has less than 8G of memory. I wanted more but I also wanted the exceptionally slim form factor.Immediately after it was unpacked I was impressed with the quality of the build. It is incredibly thin. The keyboard has to be the best Chicklet keyboard I have used. The layout of the keys is very well done, and they are crisp.I have been using it now for 3 weeks. This is by far the best machine I have ever owned or used. It blows the socks off a friends laptop (hint... it is silver).The only negatives that I have found (which exist on every other machine I looked at)* The screen is a little too bright for me so I lowered the brightness and it is still crisp. The high resolution results in everything being smaller than my previous ThinkPad but that is easily adjusted.* I wish both of the USB ports were 3.0* It needs a hot key to disable the trackpad. I occasionally let my thumb touch it while typing and the cursor will be moved.* The USB 3.0 port replicator is interesting, but I do miss just being able to drop a machine into a dock and everything including power is hooked up immediately. But its a luxury that Ultrabooks don't have.* It would be nice if Lenovo offered some upgrade to Windows 8 when it is released, but I really have no plans for going to Windows 8 in the near term so this isn't a big issue.Very happy with this purchase!

Satisfaction!

I waited a long time for this product. Lenovo (once again) delayed its shipping date for a long time, and finally shipped without the Ethernet dongle and the 3G chip. Prior to receiving my laptop (i7, 4gb ram, 256gb ssd configuration) I heard many problems about the laptop on top of the delayed shipping, including a rattly and loose trackpad, terrible battery life, and excessively bulky charger.I haven't found any of these to be true, and I am pleasantly surprised! The charger is not that bulky, it appear normal, and when I compared it with an ultra-slim charger (not made by Lenovo, bought from an outside source) they weren't all that different in terms of weight and size.The battery life has been around 3-6 hours depending on my usage, and I always have a lot of tabs open, I'm always using the internet, and I usually have Pandora open in the background. I run programming tasks, use Solidworks, and do a lot of stuff with it, and even under heavy use it lasts for a good 3-4 hours. Lenovo also has some nifty ways to extend battery life.I don't use the trackpad much, since I love the trackpoint, but it seems totally fine, no looseness yet...However, there was a lot of preloaded bloatware, and I uninstalled most of it, including the Lenovo Power Manager because it wasn't very useful and it stopped working after a week.Despite its faults, I can't help but give it 5 stars for its amazing lightness, the screen quality (not sure why people didn't like it, maybe my eyes are just too bad to notice the pixels!), and its battery life and slimness. Not the most powerful machine, but it serves my purposes PERFECTLY since I travel a lot and it doesn't feel like anything in my bag. Then again, I'm converting from an IBM Thinkpad T43, which weighed about 5.3lb for the same screen size.

Everyone who travels a lot, and who needs their computer all the way along, and not just a computer but a fast and powerful one, and light-weight at the same time - this is exactly it! Highly recommend.
