By Brian Wilson
I bought this laptop from Dell back in February 2012. I have the i7 2.8 Ghz / 320GB / 4GB / NVIDIA configuration, with Windows 7 Ultimate.Portability:It is a very heavy laptop. It's also thick and has a large footprint. It fits fine in most 15-16" laptop bags and backpacks. But if you have to lug it around during the day, you may want to consider a lighter weight laptop or possibly the Latitude E6420 14" LED Core i7 2.70 GHz 4GB DDR3 SDRAM 320GB HDD DVD-Writer 64-bit Windows 7 Professional Notebook (little brother). In retrospect, I wish I'd done that.Reliability:In several months since I bought the E6520, I've only experienced one BSOD (blue screen of death). It's been very reliable/solid and all the hardware seems to work as expected, with one exception below.Fingerprint Scanner:I've yet to figure out how to get the fingerprint scanner to work. I loved that feature on other Dell laptops and have spent quite a bit of time on forums and Dell Support trying to find the magic combination of how to set it up, and have failed. Please post a comment if you know how to get it to work.Sound:The speakers are not very good/loud, which is fine for most business work (unless you're doing multimedia work). If you plan on listening to music or watching movies, you'll need external speakers or headphones. There's just not much volume. There is no microphone input port! But thankfully, there's an internal mic that works pretty well. If you want to get digital sound out, I highly recommend Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro II USB Analog & Digital Audio Adapter which works seamlessly (plug and play) with this laptop (and I'm sure others).Graphics:The internal NVIDIA card is adequate for most purposes, unless you're rendering movies (like I've been doing lately). It drives projectors well, but it doesn't always detect their native resolution, so you may have to manually set it. The LED monitor really looks very good and has plenty of brightness. The HDMI port works well.Battery:The battery doesn't last long at all. That's my biggest beef. If you rely on the battery a lot, you will want to get another one. I usually get about 1.5 or so hours on a full charge using the stock battery. Not very good. Conclusion:Overall, it's a very solid performer, but is not very portable compared to the competition, especially at this price. It's still a pretty good decision for a business laptop, if you're looking for an Intel i7 / NVIDIA machine with a docking station option.
