5I've Had a Great Experience So Far!
By Watching
I'm somewhat surprised by the other reviewers having problems as they have. I have had mine for almost 3 months and I have no big issues. The touch pad does take some getting used to but mine doesn't need excessive pressure. The one thing it does occasionally is go into zoom mode accidentally, but I think it's caused by touching it at more than one place while typing. I went in to the options and set it up like I like it when it was days old. The keyboard is reasonably good for me. It's not the best I've ever tried, but it is far from the worst and I prefer it to the HP and the Acer that are also in my household. I like the Mac keyboard my daughter has a little better.I don't have any other issues. I bought mine from one of the large vendors that allow you to customize the laptop when you buy it. I put a 120GB SSD in lieu of the standard primary drive and a 750GB 7200 RPM unit as the secondary drive. I deleted the Blu-Ray burner and replaced it with a cheaper Blu-Ray player to cut the cost a little bit and because I don't anticipate burning Blu-Ray discs. I don't remember the other changes, but there were a few. I have 8GB of RAM, but slightly better than the original. I had the software installed by the vendor after the changes were made, without putting all the ASUS bloatware back in.The monitor is very, very good. I had a previous ASUS (M70) with the same resolution but the colors were washed out on that one when watching movies or playing games. This one is fabulous. Everyone who tries it is very impressed. I like the way it gets rid of heat. I would prefer a different 12V connection because I like to hold it between my legs in a recliner occasionally and it sticks out in the way. The Mac solution is the best and I don't know why all vendors don't do something similar. Oh, yeah, the touch pad is getting shiny where I use it all the time. I've only played one game on it: Sniper- Ghost Warrior. It runs it at max settings without problems and it is beautiful. It is awkward to use this touch pad for gaming and I would prefer a mouse if I wasn't sitting in my recliner. Because of back problems, I can't sit upright in a different chair for long periods playing games, so for me I just make do. I might try some kind of a game controller.I hope that this helps some of you to see that not all are dissatisfied.

4I love it
By antiraza
Unfortunate that other folks have had negative experiences. I have not.I've had mine for about 9 months now, I use it as a professional 'moving-workstation', doing a lot of heavy creative development work, (Adobe Suite, 3D graphics, Motion Tracking etc.)Hardware: A+. The GFX card combined with the generous default RAM and Processor set up have enabled me to do everything I need to, and I do some fairly heavy duty graphics work. The monitor is bright and crisp. I recently upgraded the machine to 16GB ram and it is now performing even better. I have done some 3D gaming on the machine and it holds up comparably to its specs. The 1TB harddrive has been more than enough for my needs. I considered swapping it out for an SSD, but at this point the extra space is more valuable than the speed.Sound: Good enough. I don't watch movies that much on it, but when I do, the sound is good. I have only used the subwoofer attachment once, because I don't think it added enough value to merit carrying it around.Nits: The keyboard could be better. I love having a full keyboard with num-pad, because I can do a lot of shortcut key work using the num pad, but I do wish it could have had chicklet style keys (not possible with this screen size and also including a numpad, they did the best they could given the form factor). The trackpad multi touch is good but not Apple good. I hate Apple stuff for a lot of reasons, but they are simply the leaders in multi-touch responsiveness and reliability. Asus gets close with this, and the multitouch is functional and adds a lot of efficiency. It's reliable, but it's not delightful. The DVD eject button is very difficult to press, I usually have to lift the machine up and look at the button to find it before I can press it. However, I honestly have only needed optical media a handful of times since I got the machine. There is a fair amount of bloatware, but I have not uninstalled it as they all seem to be serving a valuable purpose (eg. USB charging when the machine is off, Instant On and battery management). The glossy lid material sucks. It's a fingerprint magnet. I do wish it was matte. It is not a very solid feeling machine (eg. an aluminium MBP), it feels plastic in the lid area, but it is actually quite solid. It has held up fine (no drops or abuse at my end, but I do travel a lot by plane (including international travel), and it has taken all that moving around without so much as a ding or scratch)./NitsThe keys on the left hand side that shortcut to various items do not bother me. I rarely press them accidentally (as they are too stiff to do so), but I also only use the volume control keys and the rest just take up space.Instant On is very reliable and works excellently. I love it.HDMI out is a great +, and have used it often. USB 3 and the USB always-on charger port have also been great things to have. My phone died while I was out on a job in the middle of a chaotic environment, ran a cable from my backpack into my pocket, and made it through the rest of the day. Got on a plane and my phone was near dead, plugged it in and napped through the flight, disembarked with a fully charged phone and barely a dent in my battery life on the laptop.Heat management is quite good. It runs hot when the GPU really goes to work, as you would expect, but even then it is not so hot as to be uncomfortable to hold on your lap while working. During normal use the temperature is nominal. The power management is fairly good, I get 5-6 hrs of regular use, 2-3 hours of heavy use (Video editing etc.) Standby seems to last forever... Long enough for a regular use machine If you are looking for a machine with a longer battery life, you would need to compromise on power and weight. This is a good balance of power, weight and battery life. I love the fact that the battery does not charge if it is plugged in and the level is >97%. Thank you ASUS for protecting me from unnecessary battery decay. It's not light, it's not unbearably heavy. It is not a light machine, but again, this is a powerful workstation, and so portability is sacrificed slightly.Overall, and for the cost, if you need a gaming rig or a 3d/2d graphics workstation on a budget, and are willing to making some partial sacrifices in the battery life and scale departments, this machine simply cannot be beat. I have a MacBook Pro from my office and I absolutely loath using it for graphics work as opposed to this bad boy, it is SO much snappier and more stable. Why then, a 4 star review and not 5 stars?1) Glossy lid, matte would have made my machine look cleaner and feel cleaner.2) Not chicklet style keyboard (I know it would not have been possible, but I still wish for it).3) More more more more/Less less less less. More battery life. Less weight. Possible? Probably not, but again, I wish for it.4) I wish the multitouch was more 'delightful' to use (but it is fully usable in its current state).

1Buyer Beware
By Overquoted
I have edited this review multiple times out of a sense of fairness. After all, things go wrong sometimes. A single piece of faulty hardware does not implicate an entire line. But terrible warranty repair? Multiple times? A driver issue that many customers have and Asus cannot or will not fix? I am so angry at this point that I am opening a case with the BBB. Asus has gone beyond bad service into actually damaging whatever value is left in my laptop. I shall spend the semester saving money to buy a brand new $1000+ laptop I can ill-afford just to replace this utter piece of crap.Straight of the box, the NS7SF is pretty awesome. The only complaint I had was the touchpad, which had buttons chosen for aesthetics without regard for how much pressure is required to use them. But the screen was brilliantly vivid; whites were bright enough to require a lowering of the brightness and blacks were pitch-black even at the highest brightness settings. The videocard ran modern games like Left 4 Dead 2 on high settings without overheating. And the sound was fantastic, even without the sub-woofer. A friend of mine walked into my living room and thought I was playing music from my tv instead of the N75SF. There really wasn't anything I wasn't satisfied with aside from the touchpad. Even the case seemed sturdy; unlike my previous laptop, the back of the LCD panel didn't bend inward if I happened to place something on top of it.This lasted until the USB ports started having issues with a half-dozen different devices. Code 10 error after using them once and then plugging them back in later. The only way to fix it was to restart the entire system. Kind of a pain if you are multi-tasking and just need to do one small thing on a USB device. I tried multiple factory resets without any change. Eventually, I RMA'ed it. But this was only after the power-harness became so loose I had to fight with the jack to get it to charge. This all by April, and I bought the laptop in October. So, Asus pays for the shipping to/from the RMA center and are pretty quick about it, too. Maybe two weeks, including shipping time. But when I get it, I find out that the harness is still slightly loose, though not nearly as bad; I suspect I will run into the exact same power issue within six months, however. The motherboard was replaced, but didn't fix the USB issues (meaning it was a driver issue that Asus *somehow* was unaware of up until then). They also replaced a speaker somewhere because I was having issues with the sound disappearing, but there's no telling if it was hardware or driver. Finally, they replaced the LCD screen. This was neither desired nor requested by me. They saw some problems with the screen (a few small bright spots that had never bothered me because they were only visible against extremely light backgrounds). That, initially, seemed quite lovely. They saw a problem and took proactive action, right? Wrong. They replaced the screen with a substandard, non-stock model. This screen was duller than the $300 Compaq screen in my old laptop. It lacked any vividness and whites were not white, but grey. I was furious, but I was busy with moving.Fast forward less than a month, the day before a trip to the city I was moving to, and the LCD screen fails entirely. Would not come on at all. Obviously, Asus is using refurbished parts, regardless of their condition, to satisfy their warranties. So it gets sent in again. I get it back fairly quickly and they've replaced it with a slightly different LCD model, but at least it's somewhat comparable. It's not as bright and reflects like a mirror (unlike the original), but at least it's brighter than the Compaq laptop (unlike the first replacement). But it's also refurbished since it came stock with dead pixels. I also just absolutely love that they managed to break the speaker plate above the keyboard; neither end will stay down now.So, to reiterate, Asus first tried using a sub-standard, non-stock replacement part for an undesired and unrequested repair. When that part failed, they went with a better model (but still refurbished) replacement part, but broke a part of the laptop before sending it back to me. My $1300 was certainly money well spent; multiple reinstallations, multiple RMA's, and at the end of the day, I still have a slightly broken laptop. That said, if the only thing you care about is a very quick warranty service that will get your laptop functioning enough to use (even if only for a little while), Asus is perfect.I give props to their (I suspect foreign) customer service representatives (I contacted them through e-mail). They were always very polite, even when my temper was frayed. But that is absolutely the only positive thing I can say about my experience with Asus.

5Amazing Machine
By firstclass11856
I am a first time Apple buyer and I love this machine. It was fast to set up, intuitive features and layout. The Retina Display is crisp and easy to use, the keyboard has a great feel to it, the construction is great, and the machine it self if very responsive. The battery life is actually a little more than 7 hours with the SSD hard drive I average about 7.5 to 8 hours on a normal day.The only thing to be careful of it the display there are two manufactures for the display, LG and Samsung. The LG display has an image retention problem, while the Samsung display does not. But there is no way to guarantee which machine you are going to get. But Apple will replace the machine if you do get an image retention problem.

4Retina Macbook Pro - Apple's Prosumer laptop shines
By Greg L. Stewart
Purchased through Apple directly to get the corporate discount, since my state charges tax on Amazon purchases anyway. I've had a number of Apple laptops over the years, and (not surprisingly) this one is the best. It is slim, speedy and well constructed. No image retention problems that I've seen. Resolutions at 1440x900, 1680X1050 and 1920X1080 all look fantastic, allowing you to choose between more display space (with a little interface lag) and a standard amount of display space (with no lag). Text is crisp at all resolutions. I noticed at first that the fans were spinning up with some regularity, but since a recent firmware update I haven't noticed them once. To be honest, I just haven't seen the variety of problems mentioned in another review.I can absolutely recommend this machine to anyone who wants or needs a prosumer level laptop. For home use, a Macbook Air is probably a better bet...its lighter and substantially less expensive. Just don't look at the retina MBP's display, because you WILL want it!

4Just the display itself is worth most of the money you pay!
By D. Janapa
I was thinking abt getting this amazing macbook since the time the previous version was announced at WWDC last year.I was apprehensive of spending $2,200+tax = $2,400 now that Californians also have to pay taxes for purchasing from amazon. Also I have been a PC guy since the time I have known about computers, so a big switch.I couldn't wait longer and finally got the newer one couple of weeks and with some help from friends I got it for $1,869 no tax ! It finally arrived yesterday!First impression. My rankings for the features of this product go in the orderAmazing/mind blowing display. One cannot take eyes of it (dint face any issue as one of the reviewers had mentioned about the strain). Watching Hulu or iTunes trailers / your own pictures or videos is so sharp and clear. After getting used to this you wudnt want to go to any laptop. This is something that happened to me after getting the iPad with retina display as well :)The sleek/slim n sexy design (everyone knows how sleek MacBooks are..so nothing new)Super fast booting.I am amazed with the way it boots up and also the instant wake up from sleep.I hear almost all the pcs or ultrabooks do the same now a days. But well this is the first experience for me as such.Really fast response browsing through or multi tasking.Camera for FaceTime video or taking pictures. This is one aspect I am little disappointed.I don't find the camera that good. When checked at the apple store the picture from the MacBook's camera seemed really good, but here It's slightly blurry and unclear.I was hoping to do FaceTime from my MacBook Pro as well. I guess I will just have to take pics or FaceTime from iPad or iPhone. The BatteryLittle disappointed with this as well. I did not see the expected 7 hrs battery life.So far I may have got only 3-4 hrs battery life If I am not wrong. May be as I use it longer the battery life would improve. And the fact that now all your apple devices stay synced is one of the important points or factors one may want to get a MacBook. (Not necessarily this expensive MacBook)So far I have not faced any other issues what someone had quoted.I will update my review in next few days after I work on it for a week more.I have taken out one star ..for the disappointing camera and battery life.

1HORRIBLE Customer Service
By J. Century
I thought you might want to know about a customer service nightmare I'm having with the Alienware Solution Station. My son is 13 and saved up to buy his Alienware M18x. He had a problem and tried to resent to factory settings and made a mistake. His bad...should have looked on line for instructions first. Still, we called Alienware and asked for help. For a fee, they said they would take care of it.That was five weeks ago. Fourteen phone calls later. Four technician appointments - three of which had NO technician show up. First, they did the basic re-install. However, they couldn't get the wireless card to work and came to the obviously incorrect conclusion there was something wrong with the wireless card (it was working fine before we called them). I waited for a technician a few days later. He showed up, replaced the wireless card and it still didn't work. I called back. They worked on the software some more (remotely) and still couldn't fix the wireless. So, they decided that the replacement wireless card was bad and needed to be replaced again.I received two confirmation calls from Dell but the technician never showed. When I called, I was told it was because the part was backordered. Nobody ever called to tell me (these are three hour time windows I'm waiting). Then, two more confirmation calls for a couple days later. The technician never showed and lied about calling me and waiting 20 minutes. At that point I said that I wasn't going to wait again for a wireless card that was unnecessary in the first place. The Alienware support person asked what I wanted him to do - so I said I wanted him to fix the software. After about an hour, he did. He discovered that the technician who did the initial work (a month had passed at this point - and about 10 calls) did it incorrectly and nobody ever went back to check it. Then, however, it turns out we had a problem with graphics that we didn't have before. He couldn't solve it and instead said that we needed a new graphics card. So, today, I waited again. I got two confirmation calls from Dell and the technician didn't show up. Again, because the part is on backorder, but nobody told me. So now, I've spent countless hours working with my son at times (of course, he has to go to school at some point), taking up time in my working day, and most of it wasted because the support people did the job incorrectly the first time, told me I needed parts I didn't need, and have on-site technicians who lie and don't call customers to tell them they aren't coming.Today, I asked to talk to someone who might be interested in hearing about this. Tech support transferred me to customer service. They wanted to transfer me to tech support. Finally, I got the woman to understand that I thought they might want to know that their tech support has been terrible and their on-site technicians don't show up. She told me her manager would call me. Who is good for a bet that I don't hear a word?So...I wait...with my frustrated kid...for the part that is on backorder and the technician who doesn't call and there's nothing I can do, except let other Alienware users know, just as a heads up. It may be a great notebook, but it's useless if my son can't use it.

4Awesome but...
By Shawn Walters
The m18x is an awesome machine. But the biggest reason people choose the m18x over the m17x is the ability to have dual GPU (and 1" inch extra screen). This model does not offer a dual GPU, so keep that in mind. Another thing to keep in mind, this thing is HUGE. Literally you won't be able to lift it with one hand. You can carry it with one, but it's big and heavy. Heat dissipation is excellent on it. Thing never got hot. In the end I ended up returning this for a m17x. Btw, Amazon rocks!

5Excellent Laptop
By J. White
I found this laptop to be well thought out and comfortable to use. The i5 processor provides plenty of power for almost any task while not running so hot as to cause the fans to continually go on and off as a lot of the i7 laptops do out there today. The fans are pretty quite most of the time except during long software installs like installing multiple Windows Updates. The display quality and lighted keyboard are excellent. The only "Con" of the unit I observed was that while running during ordinary tasks the battery life averaged only 2.5 hours. An extended life "sheet" battery is available but it has the disadvantage of adding thickness to the laptop. The laptop is very light and I wish Sony had designed it for a larger standard battery even if the weight would have been more. All in all though this is one fine laptop and recommended.

5Great Laptop, VERY Pleased.
By Sean
I've owned this computer for several months, and it has been a great computer. I saw there was a 2 star review of this model and I wanted to share my experience regarding his comments, and also some of thoughts of my own.Fan - Yes it is located on the back and and substantially "blocked" by the screen, but the screen is so thin that I think it acts somewhat like a radiator, and like the other reviewer, (Neil) said, heat is not an issue. Also, in my experience the noise from the fan is minimal, (usually I have to put my head closer to the computer to confirm that the slight whirring noise is actually coming from the computer, and not something else nearby) This is by far the quietest computer I've used, save for some Apple laptops that don't have a fan at all.Yes, it is mostly, if not completely plastic on the exterior, but it doesn't seem like "cheap" plastic, it has a decent texture, and it doesn't look gaudy as many laptops do.Battery life is not very important to me, but is does have enough life to play about 1-2 BD movies, or 2-3 DVD movies. The 1080p HD Screen is this laptops strong suit, I also really like the back-lit keyboard with auto on/off.The touch pad is accurate and easy to use with both light or firm touch. So far I haven't experienced any soft/hard-ware issues, the computer always starts up quickly, and has NEVER needed a restart, (other than restarts required for software installs).I have used both the STAMINA and SPEED settings, fan speeds for mine don't differ very much. I haven't noticed any difference in "speed" of operation between the two settings, but what I have noticed is when the computer is in the STAMINA setting, the screen refresh rate dramatically reduces, and while under florescent, (60Hz) lighting, screen flashing is noticeable. I think this is the big contributor to extended battery life, (having the screen "on" less of the time, (probably 60Hz instead of 120Hz or more)). Also, when the computer is set to Speed, the WiDi feature doesn't work, I don't view this as a problem, because I'm convinced that most of what this switch does is change the screen refresh rate, and since you won't be using the computers screen it shouldn't be a downfall. My Conclusion: Very nice laptop, minimal fan noise, stays "cool", awesome screen and back-lit keyboard, nice touch-pad, light weight, versatile, powerful, and I think, the only light weight, large HD screen, BluRay Disc playing laptop on the market. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!Thanks for reading,Sean

4The good, the bad, and the ugly
By Some Reveiwer Guy
I've had this computer for about 2 weeks now and my impressions so far are mixed. The computer is a great balance of features and portability, especially for the price. It is thin and light weight, which is great considering it has a large hard drive and blue-ray player. I also love the LED backlit keyboard. The display is great as well. Now for the bad - I hate most Windows computers come with so much junk software. This thing seems to be relying on too much of the processor considering it's new and I haven't installed much yet. When I open performance monitor with no programs open, it hovers around 5% CPU usage. I may end up doing a clean reinstall of Windows to see if it addresses the problem because deleting programs hasn't helped. The microphone is also terrible. I don't know if it's the fan that causes interference, but the microphone is not acceptable for recording or for Skype-ing. I had to buy a USB microphone (there is no microphone jack), but now I have fantastic sound quality. I record videos so I probably would have done this anyway. And for the ugly - as I mentioned, the processor seems to be overworking for some reason. Unfortunately, the fan placement is terrible. The vent is on the bottom of the computer toward the right side. There is no way not to have it sitting on your right leg if you have it on your lap, constantly blowing warm air on your leg (and I do mean constantly - the fan has not turned off since I've owned it, except when it's in sleep mode). This thing definitely runs warmer than I would like. I'm probably going to end up buying a cooling pad for it because it's intolerable in the summer. I would actually give this computer 3.5 stars if that were an option. The only reason I bumped it up to 4 is because it's probably the most computer (without bulk) that you can get for the money.

4Biggest drawback is Windows 8--otherwise great!
By P. L. MURPHY
I have owned the 7214 for three weeks. It is quick and has top-of-the-line features. Including the latest Intel Ivy Bridge I7 3630QM chips. The biggest problem is using W8. A hybrid piece of software that ruins the computer desktop and is a half-ass tablet. However, leave it to American ingenuity to develop an add-on that transforms the W8 experience. Search for START 8, download for $5. It enables the 7214 to bypass W8 tile menu and brings up a Windows 7 desktop. Now W8 is workable. The official Start Menu/Tiles is worthless for the PC user since it does nothing of value. The apps have limited functionality, not even a navigation/tools menu at the top. Buy this powerful laptop, but also get Start 8.

5Great computer
By Angelo French
I have owned this computer for over a month and i have had no problems running any programs. If you're looking to buy this computer for gaming it is a fairly good choice, the GT650M plays most games at high settings(Tested Far Cry 3 at high and got around 45-50fps). As for windows 8, it can be a little annoying until you learn the work arounds. two things i found that help are downloading START 8 and adding some hotkeys to quicken things up. I could not be happier with this computer in terms of looks, weight, and features. One thing that seems trivial, but is actually really nice for people like me who always lock their computer when they leave it. Is the fingerprint scanner, instead of typing in my usual 12-15 letter password i just slide my finger across the scanner and it reads it and lets me in.What was my final reason for going with this computer over the others i was looking at was the screen. Damn am i glad i shelled out the extra $150 dollars for the 1080p screen, it looks absolutely amazing, no glare, and rich colors. The only thing i was slightly disappointed with on this computer was the mouse pad, more specifically, it's button. The left click has no resistance in it and the right one does. it gets kind of annoying.Overall i highly recommend this computer to anyone who wants a good looking, high-quality, and powerful computer that they can carry around with them.

5Great PC!
By Hudson
I absolutely love this computer. I have had it for a couple of weeks and it has so far served my needs perfectly. I didn't buy this particular version. I instead got a version with 500gb of SSD memory that is also available on this site. The pc turns on in about 10 seconds and it loads massive documents near instantly. I am not sure what the hybrid version is like, but I highly, highly recommend you get the SSD version. This computer's switchable graphics give it good battery life for taking notes (About 4 hours with low brightness surfing the internet), while at the same time the GeForce 650M is a solid graphics card. It definitely isn't the best (on SC2 max settings I experience a bit of lag during the endgame in 2v2s), but it will play any game on at least decent settings. The display is gorgeous at 1920x1080. The i7 processor is super fast, and with turbo boost you will probably never be bottle-necked by your processor.I have not had problems with the computer overheating at all. It has a great cooling system (although it is not quite Asus Republic of Gamers quality). It is also fairly light for what it is capable of doing, and it looks gorgeous. My main gripe is that my touchpad left clicker is a little stuck and is kind of irritating. I usually use a mouse anyway, so overall this is not a problem. Oh, and the touchpad is very responsive and for the first time I don't feel like pulling my hair out attempting to navigate with it. Other reviewers are correct - Windows 8 is a pain and takes some getting used to, but the hardware on this PC is fantastic and I won't fault it for Windows 8.On the whole, this is a great all around computer. It can play games and is very powerful, and at the same time it is sleek, fairly light, and great for work related tasks.
